What is Arjun Tree?


Terminalia Arjuna is commonly known as Arjun tree.

It is an evergreen, deciduous tree that grows about 20–25 meters tall, and usually found growing on river banks or near dry river beds.

It is native to India but also seen across the Indian Subcontinent (Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Myanmar) and some other Asian Countries.


It has conical leaves, which are green from the top and brown below, it has a pale yellow flower, has fibrous woody fruit divided into five wings, and it has smooth bark, which is grey outside and reddish from the inside.


According to Ayurveda, Arjuna Bark is an excellent medicine for Heart, which has the capability to even reduce heart failure, that’s why it is also known as “Guardian of the heart.”

Besides this, it is also used in the treatment of wounds, diabetes, cancer haemorrhages and ulcers.


It is one of the species whose leaves are fed on by the ‘Antheraea paphia moth’ which produces the “tassar silk” (Tussah), a form of wild silk of commercial importance.

It is also planted to provide shade, especially in coffee plantations.
