# What is an iodine solution?

Lugol's iodine, also known as aqueous iodine and strong iodine solution, is iodine dissolved in a solution of potassium iodide.

It is often used as an antiseptic and disinfectant, for emergency disinfection of drinking water, and as a reagent for starch detection in the laboratory and medical tests.
