What is Algae?
Algae (singular alga) is an aquatic photosynthetic organism of the kingdom Protista. Algae were classified into major groups based on colour such as red, brown, and green.
Examples of algae are spirogyra, Chlorococcum sp, chlorella, Haematococcus Pluvialis, etc.
Algae perform photosynthesis and form organic food molecules from carbon dioxide and water in the presence of sunlight. Algae are present across the world and can be categorized ecologically by their habitats such as freshwater algae, marine algae, etc.
Algae are used as a source of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA), vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, natural colorants, etc.
