What is a water meter?

A water meter is a mechanical device used to measure the flow of water entering your home. The bill you pay for water every month is based on the reading of the water meter. It only records the water used but not how it is used. For example, if there is a leak, the meter records the water in the same way that it would if you were washing clothes or watering plants.
