What is a chemical equation? Why are chemical equations balanced? Write a balanced chemical equation with state symbols for the following reaction:Solutions of barium chloride and sodium sulphate in water react to give insoluble barium sulphate and the solution of sodium chloride.
Chemical equation is a written symbolic representation of a chemical reaction. The reactant(s) are given on the left-hand side and the product(s) on the right-hand side.
Balanced chemical equation has equal numbers of each type of atom on both sides of the arrow. According to the law of conservation of mass atoms can neither be created nor destroyed in a chemical reaction, hence the number of atoms that are present in the reactants has to balance the number of atoms that are present in the products.
Solutions of barium chloride and sodium sulphate in water react to give insoluble barium sulphate and the solution of sodium chloride.
The balanced chemical equation is for the above reaction is:
$BaCl_2 (aq) + Na_2SO_4 (aq) → BaSO_4 (s) + 2NaCl (aq)$
