What is a habitat? Explain its type.


A habitat is a natural environment where a particular species of organism dwells (live). A species find food, shelter, protection from the predator, and mating partner for reproduction in its habitat.

For example, Pond is the habitat for Fish. Trees are the habitat for Birds and Monkeys.

Habitat is divided into two major types, and they are – 

1. Terrestrial Habitat- The term terrestrial generally used to describe living organisms that live and grow on land.

Further Terrestrial Habitats are divided into four main types-

i. Grasslands- Animals commonly found in this habitat are Lion, Deer, Giraffe, Zebra, Elephant, etc.

Plants commonly found in this habitat are Baobab, Elephant grass, Ombu tree, Coneflower, Lupines, etc.

ii. Deserts- Animals commonly found in this habitat are Camels, Kangaroo rat, etc.

Plants commonly found in this habitat are Cactus, Acacia, etc.

iii. Mountainous & Polar- Animals commonly found in this habitat are Polar bear, Penguin, Seal, Walrus, Elk, Moose, Mule deer, Mountain goat, Grey wolf, etc.

Plants commonly found in this habitat are Mosses, Lichens, Pine, Maple, Cedar, Oak, Deodar, etc. 

iv. Forests- Animals commonly found in this habitat are Bat, Sloth, Macaw, Gorilla, Fox, Black bear, Wolf, Squirrel, etc.

Plants commonly found in this habitat are Orchid, Moss, Vine, Fern, Oak, Maple, Fir, Pine, etc.

2. Aquatic- The aquatic habitat is a habitat that comprises all the water bodies on the planet.

Further Aquatic Habitats are divided into three main types-

i. Freshwater- Animals commonly found in this habitat are Fish, Frog, Duck, etc.

Plants commonly found in this habitat are Lotus, Water lily, etc.

ii. Marine- Animals commonly found in this habitat are Fish, Shark, Whale, Crab, Jellyfish, Sea turtle, Octopus,

Plants commonly found in this habitat is seaweed.

iii. Coastal- Animals commonly found in this habitat are Starfish, Octopus, Sea urchins, etc.

Plants commonly found in this habitat is coral reefs.
