What happens when egg shell is added to Nitric Acid?
When nitric acid is added to an eggshell, it dissolves the eggshell. Eggshell is made up of calcium carbonate which dissolves in nitric acid. It gives effervescence due to the evolution of CO2 gas.
Nitric Acid reacts with eggshell (CaCO3) to form calcium nitrate [Ca(NO3)2], carbon dioxide (CO2), and water (H2O). The equation is given as:
$CaCO_{3} +2HNO_{3}\rightarrow Ca( NO_{3})_{2} +CO_{2} +H_{2} O$
