What happens when 5% alkaline potassium permanganate solution is added drop by drop to warm propyl alcohol (propanol) taken in a test tube? Explain with the help of a chemical equation.

When 5% alkaline potassium permanganate solution is added drop by drop to warm propyl alcohol (propanol) taken in the test tube, then its purple colour gradually disappears as it oxidizes the propanol to its respective carboxylic acid i.e propionic acid.

As alkaline potassium permanganate is a strong oxidizing agent, it oxidizes the primary alcohol i.e propanol to propanal and then finally to propanoic acid.

Chemical equation is given below:
$CH_{3}CH_{2}CH_{2}OH\overset{alk.KMnO_{4}}{\rightarrow}CH_{3}CH_{2}COOH$
