What happens if Earth stops rotating?

Earth's speed of rotation is 1100 miles/hour. If the Earth stopped spinning suddenly, the atmosphere would still be in motion with the Earth's original speed at the equator. This means rocks, topsoil, trees, buildings, etc would be swept away into the atmosphere.
