What do you mean by a precipitation reaction? Explain by giving examples.

Precipitation Reaction: The reaction in which an insoluble solid is formed that separates from the solution is called a precipitation reaction.
The insoluble salt that is formed in the solution is known as the precipitate. The precipitate formed is shown by the downward arrow in a chemical reaction. Precipitation reactions can help determine the presence of various ions in a solution.
Example: The reaction between barium chloride and zinc sulphate solution to form a white barium sulphate precipitate and zinc chloride solution is an example of a precipitation reaction.
 $BaCl_{2} \ +\ ZnSO_{4} \ \rightarrow \ ZnCl_{2} \ +\ BaSO_{4} \downarrow $

The reaction between silver nitrate (AgNO3) and sodium chloride (NaCl), results in the formation of silver chloride (AgCl) which is an insoluble salt.
$AgNO_{3} \ ( aq) \ +\ NaCl\ ( aq) \ \rightarrow AgCl\ ( s) +\ NaNO_{3} \ ( aq)$
