What are the three R's to save the environment? Explain with one example of each.

The three R's which can help us to conserve natural resources for long term use are reduce, recycle, reuse. The main aim of these three Rs is to prevent waste, conserve and increase the sustainability of natural resources.

1. Reduce: Reduce works on the principle of reducing the usage of natural resources by eliminating the practices that cause wastage of energy.

For example, wastage of electricity can be reduced by switching off the electrical appliances like lights and fans when not in use. Also, climbing stairs can be preferred instead of using elevators to conserve electrical energy consumed in it.

2. Recycle: Under the recycling concept, used and discarded paper, plastic, glass and metal items are collected and used in their respective industries for making fresh paper, plastic, glass or metal objects.

For example, used and waste plastic bottles and cans are used in toy manufacturing industries.

3. Reuse: Reuse works on the principle of using the same objects again to decrease the consumption of fresh material and also to prevent discarding of the less used objects.

For example, plastic, glass and metal jars of food items like jams, pickles etc. are reused as storage cans for salt and sugar.

The process of reuse is better than recycling because reusing the materials saves the energy and resources that consume in dismantling and remanufacturing products. It also reduces wastage and pollution, thereby conserving forest and water supplies.
