What are the causes of an increase or a decrease in temperatures?

Temperature is a measure of the degree of hotness or coldness of an object. If an object is hot or at a higher temperature, it implies that it is having more heat energy and if the object is cold or at a lower temperature, it means it has less heat energy.

So an increase in heat energy causes temperatures to rise and a decrease or loss of heat energy causes the ambient temperature to decrease proportionally.

Due to greenhouse gases trapping heat energy, the average temperatures are rising fast all over the world. This phenomenon is called global warming and climate change. The world goes through cycles of hot and extremely cold climates like ice ages and so on. A rise in average temperatures worldwide has led to the melting of ice caps at the poles and a rise in sea levels.
