What are rational numbers? Types of rational number.

Rational Numbers:

A number that can be expressed in the form $\frac{p}{q}$ where $p$ and $q$ are integers and $q$ is not equal to zero is a rational number.

For example, $\frac{2}{3}, \frac{4}{5}, \frac{23}{6}, 8$.

Note: Any number divided by zero is undefined but not infinity.

The different types of rational numbers are:

  • Integers like $-1, 0, 1$
  • Fractions whose numerators and denominators are integers like $\frac{1}{4}, \frac{-2}{5}$
  • Terminating decimals like $0.85, 0.452, 0.6534$
  • Non-terminating decimals with some repeating patterns (after the decimal point) such as $0.555..., 0.232323...$.
