What are protein carbohydrates deficiency diseases ? Name the two diseases?
Deficiency of proteins, carbohydrates and fats result in protein-calorie malnutrition (PCM) or Protein Energy Malnutrition (PEM).
It is a common childhood disorder that is primarily caused by the deficiency of energy, protein, and micronutrients.
PEM can lead to underweight (low body weight compared with healthy fellow), stunting (poor linear growth), wasting (drastic weight loss), or malnutrition.
Deficiency diseases caused due to PEM are Kwashiorkor and Marasmus.
When a child unintentionally loses 10% or more body weight in a period of six months or less, it can be said that the child is suffering from PEM.
