Linear Equations: Equations in which the highest power of variables is one are called linear equations.

Consider the following equation: 

$15k - n = 23$ 

In the equation $15k - n = 23$, power of $k$ and $n$ is $1$. So, the equation $15k - n = 23$ is a linear equation.
