What are Ions?
An ion is an atom or molecule with a net electric charge due to the loss or gain of one or more electrons.
A cation is a positively charged ion. It has more protons than electrons, consequently giving it a net positive charge. For a cation to form, one or more electrons must be lost from the metal atom. These cations are attracted towards the negative charge cathode during the electrolysis process.
Examples: Sodium (Na+), Iron (Fe2+)
An anion is a negatively charged ion. It has more Electrons, For an Anion to form, a non-metal must gain electrons. These anions are attracted towards the positive charge anode during the electrolysis process.
Examples: Chloride (Cl-)
