What are epithelial tissues and its functions?

Epithelial tissues are made up of thin, irregular shaped cells which are tightly packed and form a continuous sheet.

They are widespread throughout the body, as they form the covering of the external surfaces, internal cavities and organs of the animal body.

The skin, the lining of the mouth, blood vessels, mouth, lung alveoli, nose, oesophagus, and kidney tubules are all made of epithelial tissue.

They perform various functions such as absorption, protection, filtration, secretion, diffusion, sensory reception, and excretion.

Functions of Epithelial Tissues are as follows:

1. They form a barrier to keep different body systems separate.

2. They protect the parts of the body from mechanical injury, drying, entry of germs, chemical effects, etc.

3. They secrete a variety of substances such as saliva, sweat, enzymes, etc.

4. Because of being highly permeable, they play an important role in regulating the exchange of materials between the body and the external environment.
