What are crops?


Crop: When same type of plants are grown and cultivated at one place in huge quantity is known as a crop.

There are two types of crop based on their season of cultivation: Kharif crop and Rabi crop.

Kharif crops are the crops which are grown during the monsoon or rainy season (June to October). They are also known as monsoon crops. Their seeds are sown at the beginning of the monsoon season and the crops are harvested at the end of the monsoon season. The main Kharif crops grown in India include paddy, maize, jowar, bajra, cotton, sugarcane, groundnut, pulses etc.

Rabi crops are the crops which are grown during the winter season (November to January) and harvested in the spring season in India. They are also known as winter crops. Cultivation of Rabi type crops are mainly carried out through irrigation as rainy season completes by November. The main Rabi crops grown in India include wheat, barley, mustard and green peas.
