We quite often use three terms- Matter, Material and Substance. Do all of these are same or different? If different, how do these differ from one another?

Anything that occupies space and has mass is known as matter.

It is made up of very small tiny particles. All matter is made up of atoms, which are in turn made up of protons, neutrons and electrons. Atoms come together to form molecules, which are the building blocks for all types of matter.

Particles of matter have space between them they attract each other.

• The particles of matter are very, very small.

• The particles of matter have space between them.

• The particles of matter are constantly moving.

• The particles of matter attract each other.

Most matter consists of mixtures of pure substances, which can be homogeneous (uniform in composition) or heterogeneous (different regions possess different compositions and properties). Pure substances can be either chemical compounds or elements.

From the above, we understand that Matter, Material and Substance can be called the same.
