$x$ = 168

Now,

The total number of students in the school = Number of boys $+$ Number of girls

The total number of students in the school = $12x\ +\ 5x$

The total number of students in the school = $17x$

The total number of students in the school = $17\ \times\ 168$

The total number of students in the school = 2856

So, total strength of the school is 2856.
