The mean of 5 numbers is 18. If one number is excluded, their mean is 16. Find the excluded number.
Given:
The mean of 5 numbers is 18.
When one number is excluded, their mean is 16.
To do:
We have to find the excluded number.
Solution:
We know that,
Mean $\overline{X}=\frac{Sum\ of\ the\ observations}{Number\ of\ observations}$
Mean of 5 numbers $= 18$
Total of 5 numbers $= 18 \times 5$
$= 90$
When one number is excluded, their mean is 16.
This implies,
Total of 4 of the numbers $= 16 \times 4$
$= 64$
Therefore,
Excluded number $= 90 - 64$
$= 26$
The excluded number is 26.
