The atomic numbers of the three elements X, Y and Z are 2, 6 and 10 respectively.
(i) Which two elements belong to the same group?
(ii) Which two elements belong to the same period?
Give reasons for your choice.
(i) X and Z belong to the same group.
X and Z have zero valency hence they belong to the same group as they are noble gases.
(ii) Y and Z belong to the same period.
Y has the electronic configuration: 2,4 and Z has the electronic configuration: 2,8 so, both of them belong to the second period with two shells filled. Therefore, they belong to the same period.
