Sundials tell accurate time because of light and shadows in the day but for night moondials were used, so how were people able to know the accurate time at night?
The working of a sundial is to cast a shadow on a disk marked with different time periods which tells accurate time. A sundial works in day time only. it works on varying the different positions of the sun throughout the whole day. It does not work at night.
To know the accurate time on the night, moondials were used which were identical to a sundial. A moondial tells accurate time one night per month (night of full moon) only and later people used to know the accurate time by adding 48 minutes to the moondial reading.
