Solution :

Step 1 : Subtract the numbers in ten's place.

Subtract 6 from 4, 

As 4 is smaller than 6, borrow 1 from 1's place. now, 4 becomes 14. 

Step 2 : Subtract 6 from 14 , $14 - 6 = 8$ , put 8 on ten's place.

Step 3 : Subtract the numbers in one's place.

As we borrowed 1 from one's place, 5 becomes 4.

So, now subtract 3 from 4, $4 - 3 = 1$, put 1 on one's place.

Step 4 : The number is 18.

                                      18

Therefore, $54 - 36$ is $18$.
