State whether the following statements are true or false:(a) The scattering away of red light makes the sky appear blue during the day time.(b) The scattering away of blue light makes the sun appear red at sunset.
(a) False.
Explanation
The scattering away of blue light not the red light makes the sky appear blue during the day time. The scattering of blue colour causes the sky appear blue as it has shorter wavelengths which scatter more easily.
(b) True.
Explanation
The reddish appearance of the sun at sunrise or sunset is due to the scattering of light by the molecules of air and other fine particles present in the atmosphere.
At sunrise or sunset, the sun remains below the horizon, hence light from the sun passes through thicker layers of air and larger distances in the earth's atmosphere before reaching our eyes. Most of the blue light rays and other shorter wavelengths rays are scattered away by the particles in the atmosphere. Therefore, only red light, being of a higher wavelength reaches us which gives the reddish appearance of the sun at sunrise or sunset.
