Solve the following :
$8\frac{1}{2} - 3\frac{5}{8}$
Given :
The given expression is $8\frac{1}{2} - 3\frac{5}{8}$
To find :
we have to solve and find the value of given expression.
Solution :
$8\frac{1}{2} = \frac{(8\times2+1)}{2} = \frac{16+1}{2} = \frac{17}{2}$
$3\frac{5}{8} = \frac{(3\times8+5)}{8} = \frac{24+5}{8} = \frac{29}{8}$
Therefore,
$8\frac{1}{2} - 3\frac{5}{8} = \frac{17}{2}- \frac{29}{8}$
LCM of 2 and 8 is 8.
$8\frac{1}{2} - 3\frac{5}{8} = \frac{17}{2}- \frac{29}{8}$
$= \frac{(17\times4-29\times1)}{8}$
$= \frac{68-29}{8}$
$= \frac{39}{8}$
$8\frac{1}{2} - 3\frac{5}{8} = \frac{39}{8}$
Therefore, the value of $8\frac{1}{2} - 3\frac{5}{8} is \frac{39}{8}$
