Smooth surfaces have more friction or rough surfaces? Why?

Perfectly smooth surfaces have high friction. This is because when perfectly smooth surfaces come in contact, the molecules of the surfaces will get very close. The molecules will have attractive forces, due to which they will stick to each other.

This creates high opposition to relative motion which is the reason for high friction
