Solution:

Distance from village to school = 4 km  

1 km  =  1000 m

So , 4 km  =  4000 m 

Distance covered when he goes from village to school is 4000 m

He covers the same distance when he return to village from school.

So the total distance covered  =  4000 $+$ 4000  =  8000 m.
