Replace the * with the smallest number so that, 78*964 may be divisible by 9.
Given :
The given number is 78*964
To find :
We have to find the replacement of * so that, 78*964 is divisible by 9
Solution :
Divisibility by 9
The rule for divisibility by 9 is similar to divisibility rule for 3. That is, if the sum of digits of the number is divisible by 9, then the number itself is divisible by 9.
Given,
78*964
Sum of the digits is $7+8+*+9+6+4 = 34+*$
Now, in place of * we have to place a number between 0 to 9 such that 34+* is
divisible by 9.  Therefore,
$34+2=36$ is divisible by 9.
The smallest number in place of * is 2.
