In mathematics, a percentage (from Latin per centum "by a hundred") is a number or ratio expressed as a fraction of 100. It is often denoted using the percent sign, "%".
One percent is one hundredth of a whole. It can therefore be written as both a decimal and a fraction. To write a percentage as a decimal, simply divide it by 100. For example, 50% becomes 0.5, 20% becomes 0.2, 1% becomes 0.01 and so on
Percentages are used widely and in many different areas. For example, discounts in shops, bank interest rates, rates of inflation and many statistics in the media are expressed as percentages. Percentages are important for understanding the financial aspects of everyday life.
