Plants Make Their Own Food, So why do we add Fertillizer in soil?
Dear Aditi,
Plants make their own food by the process of Photosynthesis.
In order to survive, plants also need mineral nutrients which they take up from soil. Sometimes, the land may have poor quality soil,or may be a marshy land is reclaimed for agricultural purpose. In such cases, Fertilizers are added to the soil so as to increase the productivity .
Fertilizers are chemical substances supplied to the crops to increase their productivity. These are used by the farmers daily to increase the crop yield. The fertilizers contain the essential nutrients required by the plants, including nitrogen, potassium, and phosphorus. They can make crops grow faster and bigger so that yields are increased. The compounds used must be water-soluble so plants can absorb them through their roots.
