Only variations that confer an advantage to an individual organism will survive in a population. Do you agree with this statement? Why or why not?
Variations do provide an advantage to an individual trying to survive in a population, but it is not totally accurate. The chance of survival depends on the type of variation. It can be lethal, neutral, or even beneficial.
Variation means the differences in the characteristics of the individuals of the species, such as the difference in skin color, height, etc. It can be caused due to a difference in the DNA sequence responsible for the expression of the particular character. Human height and ear lobe pattern (free and attached) are the two traits that show variation in human beings.
Variation provides uniqueness in terms of hair color, skin color, and even the shape of faces. It helps them to adapt to a particular environment and increases their chance of survival. For example, thermophilic bacteria are variants resistant to extreme temperatures and have a chance of survival in high temperate zones.
