One number is three times another. If the larger number is subtracted from $48$ the result is $4$ less than the smaller number subtracted from $32$ find the larger number.

Given: One number is three times another. If the larger number is subtracted from $48$ the result is $4$ less than the smaller number subtracted from $32$.

To do: To find the larger number.

Solution:

Let $x$ and $y$ be the larger number and smaller number respectively.

$\Rightarrow x=3y$

$\Rightarrow 48-x=4-32-y$

$\Rightarrow 48-3y=36-y$

$\Rightarrow 48-36=-y+3y$

$\Rightarrow 12=2y$

$\Rightarrow \frac{12}{2}=y$

$\Rightarrow y=6$

$\Rightarrow x=3\times6$

$\Rightarrow x=18$

Hence the larger number is $18$.
