On what basis is a chemical equation balanced?
A chemical equation is balanced on the basis of the law of conservation of mass.
The law states that "matter can neither be created nor destroyed". If the numbers of atoms of various elements are unequal on reactants' and products' side, it means they are either destroyed or created, which violates the law of conservation of mass. Therefore, all chemical equations should always be balanced.
