1. What is the difference between washing soda and baking soda?
  2. Write the chemical formula for bleaching powder. How is bleaching powder prepared? For what purpose is it used in paper factories?

(a) The difference between washing soda and baking soda is given below:

Washing sodaBaking soda
Sodium carbonate or washing soda is made up of sodium and acid. Its formula is Na2CO3.
Sodium bicarbonate or baking soda is made up of sodium, acid and hydrogen. Its formula is NaHCO3.
Washing soda or Sodium carbonate is commonly used in neutralizing acidic solutions in various fields.
Baking soda or Sodium bicarbonate is also used as an odour neutralizer, cleaning or exfoliating agent, and sometimes as a temporary fire extinguisher.

(b)  Bleaching powder is calcium oxychloride(CaOCl2). It is prepared by passing chlorine gas over a dry slaked lime.
The equation is given by:
Ca(OH)2+Cl2CaOCl2+H2O" role="presentation" style="display: inline-block; line-height: 0; font-size: 16.66px; overflow-wrap: normal; word-spacing: normal; white-space: nowrap; float: none; direction: ltr; max-width: none; max-height: none; min-width: 0px; min-height: 0px; border: 0px; margin: 0px; padding: 1px 0px; position: relative;">Ca(OH)2+Cl2CaOCl2+H2O

It is used for bleaching wood pulp in the paper industry.
