1. The refractive index of diamond is 2.42. What is the meaning of this statement in relation to speed of light?
  2. Describe an activity to draw a magnetic field line outside a bar magnet from one pole to another pole.

(a) When we say the refractive index of diamond is 2.42, then it means that the speed of light in diamond is 2.42 times less than the speed of light in air or vacuum. This is because the light is travelling from a rarer medium (air) to a denser medium (diamond).

In other words, the speed of light in diamond is $\frac {1}{2.42}$ times the speed of light in vacuum.

(b) The magnetic field lines are the lines drawn in a magnetic field along which a north magnetic pole would move. The magnetic lines are also known as magnetic lines of force.

Activity to draw a magnetic field line outside a bar magnet from one pole to another pole.

1. Take a small compass and a bar magnet.

2. Place the magnet on a sheet of white paper fixed on a drawing board, using some adhesive material.

3. Mark the boundary of the magnet.

4. Place the compass near the pole of the magnet.

5. The south pole of the needle points toward the north pole of the magnet.

6. The north pole of the compass is directed away from the north pole of the magnet.

7. Mark the position of two ends of the needle.

8. Now move the needle to a new position such that its south pole occupies the position previously occupied by its north pole.

9. In this way, proceed step by step till you reach the south pole of the magnet.

10. Join the point marked on the paper by a smooth curve. This curve represents a magnetic field line.
