1. Explain why, though both a plane mirror and a sheet of paper reflect light but we can see the image of our face in a plane mirror but not in a sheet of paper.
  2. The image in a plane mirror is virtual and laterally inverted. What does this statement mean?
  3. Write all the capital letters of the alphabet which look the same in a plane mirror.

(a) Though both a plane mirror and a sheet of paper reflect light but we can see the image of our face in a plane mirror but not in a sheet of paper because in-plane mirror regular reflection of light takes place as it has a smooth surface. Thus, an image is formed.

On the other hand, in the case of a sheet of paper, diffused reflection takes place as it isn't a smooth surface. Thus, no image is formed.

(b) The image in a plane mirror is virtual and laterally inverted. This statement implies that the image formed by a plane mirror cannot be obtained on a screen, and hence it is a virtual image. Further, the image formed is reversed sideways, meaning the right side of an object appears as the left side and vice-versa (left side appears as the right side), and this is called lateral inversion.

(c) All the capital letters of the alphabet that look the same in a plane mirror are A, H, I, M, O, T, V, W, and X.
