Name the products of combustion of fossil fuels like coal and petroleum products. How do they affect us and our environment?
The combustion of fossil fuels like coal and petroleum products produces carbon dioxide, sulphur oxide, nitrogen oxide and water. The incomplete combustion of fossil fuels produces carbon monoxide.
These products of combustion such as sulphur oxide and nitrogen oxide when mixed with water results in acid rain. The rise in carbon dioxide concentration in the environment cause the greenhouse effect.
Carbon monoxide gas is poisonous in nature and when it mixes with blood cells, it stops RBCs from carrying oxygen from the lungs to the other organs of the body. It can lead to suffocation and even death.
