Name the gas evolved when ethanoic acid is added to sodium carbonate. How would you prove the presence of this gas?
Ethanoic acid reacts with sodium carbonate to produce carbon dioxide gas. In order to prove the presence of this gas, allow it to pass through lime water. It turns lime water milky.
The reaction is given below:
$2CH_3COOH + Na_2CO_3 → 2CH_3COONa + CO_2 + H_2O$
$Ca(OH)_2 + CO_2 → CaCO_3 + H_2O$
