Bulbils are modified aerial stems which become fleshy and rounded due to storage of food. These axillary buds undergo vegetative propagation and develop into a new plant.

In Dioscorea, the bulbils are condensed axillary buds, whereas in Agava and lily the floral buds develop into bulbil.
