List all the items known to you that float on water. Check and see if they will float on an oil or kerosene.

Archimedes’s law states that when a body immersed in water displaces its volume of water, and if this displaced volume of water weighs more than the body immersed, the body will float. If it weighs less than the body, the body will sink.
(A) List of some items that float on water:
  • Paper
  • Wood
  • Thin plastic sheets
  • Wax
  • Ice
  • Thermocol
  • Oil
(B) List of items that float on an oil:
  • Paper
  • Plastic sheet
  • Wax
  • Thermocol
  • Wood
(C) List of items that float on kerosene:
  • Paper
  • Thermocol
  • Thin plastic sheet

[Note: The density of water is 1.003 kg/m³ and the density of oil is 0.930 kg/m³.The density of kerosene is equal to 800 kg/m³.  Hence, substances that have less density than oil and water can float in kerosene.

A few type of wood have densities higher than oil but less than water, so it floats on water but not on kerosene.]
