It was estimated that because of people switching to Metro trains, about 33000 tonnes of CNG, 3300 tonnes of diesel and 21000 tonnes of petrol was saved by the end of the year 2007. Find the fraction of:(i) the quantity of diesel saved to the quantity of petrol saved. (ii) the quantity of diesel saved to the quantity of CNG saved.

Given:

It was estimated that because of people switching to Metro trains, about 33000 tonnes of CNG, 3300 tonnes of diesel and 21000 tonnes of petrol was saved by the end of the year 2007.

To do:

We have to find the fraction of:

(i) the quantity of diesel saved to the quantity of petrol saved.

(ii) the quantity of diesel saved to the quantity of CNG saved.

Solution:

Total fuel saved $=33000+3300+21000$

$=57300$ tonnes

Fraction of CNG saved $=\frac{33000}{57300}$

$=\frac{330}{573}$

$=\frac{110}{191}$

Fraction of diesel saved $=\frac{3300}{57300}$

$=\frac{33}{573}$

$=\frac{11}{191}$

Fraction of petrol saved $=\frac{21000}{57300}$

$=\frac{210}{573}$

$=\frac{70}{191}$

(i)  The fraction of the quantity of diesel saved to the quantity of petrol saved $=\frac{\frac{11}{191}}{\frac{70}{191}}$

$=\frac{11}{70}$

(ii)  The fraction of the quantity of diesel saved to the quantity of CNG saved $=\frac{\frac{11}{191}}{\frac{110}{191}}$

$=\frac{11}{110}$

$=\frac{1}{10}$
