Is sodium chloride acidic or basic?

Sodium Chloride (NaCl) is neither acid nor basic in nature. It is a neutral salt.

  • Salts that produce hydroxide ions when dissolved in water are called alkali salts. Salts that produce acidic solutions are acid salts. Neutral salts are those salts that are neither acidic nor basic in nature.

  • Litmus test can be done to check the solution of the salts. Litmus Paper can be used to test materials for acidity and basicity of solutions.

  • Blue litmus paper turns red under acid conditions, and red litmus paper turns blue under alkaline conditions.

  • Neutral litmus paper is purple in colour.
