In the electrolysis of water (a) Name the gases liberated at anode and cathode. (b) Why is it that the volume of gas collected on one electrode is two times that on the other electrode? (c) What would happen if dil. H2SO4 is not added to water?

In the electrolysis of water
(a) The gases liberated at anode and cathode are:
Anode- Oxygen
Cathode- Hydrogen

(b) The volume of gas collected on one electrode (cathode) is twice to that collected on the other electrode (anode) as one molecule of water contains two atoms of hydrogen and one atom of oxygen.
The equation is given below:
$2H_2O\rightarrow 2H_2 + O_2$

(c) Electrolysis of water will not take place if dil. $H_{2}SO_{4}$ is not added to water.
