In integers how to add and subtract without number line

Addition of integers means there are three possibilities. They are:
  • Addition between two positive numbers,
  • Addition between two negative numbers and
  • Addition between a positive number and a negative number.
Addition of two positive integers always gives a positive integer  (2+3=5).

Addition of two negative integers always give a negative integer  [-2+(-3)=-(2+3)=-5].

To add integers with different signs, keep the sign of the number with the largest absolute value and subtract the smallest absolute value from the largest    [-10+8=-(10-8)=-2].

Subtraction of Integers:
  • Transform the subtraction of integers problem into the addition of integers problem.
  • First, keep the first number. Second, change the operation from subtraction to addition.
  • Third, get the opposite sign of the second number.
  • Finally, proceed with the regular addition of integers.
9-(-7)=9+(+7)=9+7=16.
