In a freezer, the temperature falls by 3 degrees every 4 minutes. In how much time water kept at 38 degrees will freeze into ice?

Given: In a freezer, the temperature falls by 3 degrees every 4 minutes.

To do: Find in how much time water kept at 38 degrees will freeze into ice.

Solution:

The freezing temperature of water = $0$ degrees

So the fall in temperature from $38$ degrees is

$38 - 0 = 38$ degrees.

The fall in temperature following a pattern like

$38, 35, 32, 29, 26, 23, 20, 17, 14, 11, 8, 5, 2, -1$

It takes $12 \frac{2}{3} \times 4$ minutes

= $\frac{38}{3} \times 4 = \frac{152}{3} = 50 \frac{2}{3}$ minutes

= 50.67 minutes

So it takes 50.67 minutes for the temperature  to fall from 38 degrees to the freezing point of water, i.e., 0 degrees
