If the refractive index for light going from air to diamond be 2.42, what will be the refractive index for light going from diamond to air?

Given,

Refractive index for light going from air to diamond.

$^{diamond} n_{air} =2.42$

To find = $^{air} n_{diamond}$ [Refractive index for light going from diamond to air]

Solution-

We know that, refractive index for ray of light going from medium 1 to medium 2 is equal to the reciprocal of the refractive index for ray of light going from medium 2 to medium 1.

$\displaystyle ^{air} n_{diamond} =\frac{1}{^{diamond} n_{air}}$

$\displaystyle ^{air} n_{diamond} =\frac{1}{2.42}$

$\displaystyle ^{air} n_{diamond} =0.41$

Hence, the refractive index for light going from diamond to air will be 0.41.
