If friction is due to roughness, then why is too much force required to move a rubber piece on smooth glass, even though both the surfaces are smooth?

Friction is not only caused by surface roughness.

Many times it is caused by attractive forces between two surfaces. The molecules in the surfaces form weak bonds when they come in contact.

These weak bonds cause the two objects with surfaces touching to be attracted, making it hard to slide one object on the other.
