Identify the part which contain pigment:
(a) Cell membrane
(b) Plastid
(c) Centrosome
(d) Cell wall
Correct Answer: (b) Plastid
Explanation:
Plastids are tiny machines inside a plant cell that manufacture and store various chemicals required by the plant cells. They were discovered by Ernst Haeckel in 1866. Plastids are nearly spherical or disc-shaped structures found suspended in the cells’ cytoplasm of photosynthetic organisms like plants, protists, and algae.
Plastids are semi-autonomous, i.e., they hold the ability to self-replicate as they contain smaller amounts of DNA. They help in performing various biological activities such as storage of food, carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, and also help in synthesizing proteins.
Plastids are classified into three types based on the structure, pigments, and functions-
1. Chromoplasts
2. Chloroplasts
3. Leucoplasts
