The price of a hairdryer including $8 \%$ VAT is $Rs.\ 5400$.

To do:

We have to find the price before VAT was added.

Solution:

Let the basic price of the hairdryer be $x$.

This implies,

$5400=x+\frac{8}{100}x$

$5400=x(\frac{108}{100}$

$x=\frac{5400\times25}{27}$

$x=200\times25$

$x=5000$

The price of the hairdryer before VAT was added is Rs. 5000.
